We are so excited that is it offically breeding season for the Bush Stone-curlews! If you haven't heard, these birds are classified as an endangered species and they reside in six of our seven parks... so when breeding season comes around, we are all very excited!
The curlews generally breed throughtout the Spring and Summer months. If you are staying with us during these months be sure to keep an eye out for these birds and their elaborate courtship dance which involves stretching their wings and stamping their feet.
Recently the Tweed Shire Council launched an online platform where the geneal public can go online to report Bush Stone-curlew sightings to help improve conservation outcomes. Estimations show that in NSW, 1000 breeding pairs are left. Since the launch of this online tool (in June) there has been 12 pairs recorded on The Tweed.
To kick off the breeding season we have just welcomed two new (incredibly cute) chicks at our Fingal Head park! With other parks recently reporting nests... we will have lots of baby curlews over the next few months.
We have lots of practises in place to ensure the safety of the curlew nests and chicks and are very proud to play such an important role in their survival. Many of our visitors are unaware that these threatened birds nest in our parks and that they represent a significant proportion of the NSW Bush Stone-curlew population. We have worked closely with the Tweed Shire Council to facilitate the co-habitation of these threatened birds.
Our processes, along with other action steps taken, has proven to be highly effective in protecting this endangered species and allowing them to continue to enjoy their stay with us at Tweed Holiday Parks.
